The Los Angeles Chargers are still seeking their first victory after falling 24-16 to the Buffalo Bills, and coach Jim Harbaugh placed added emphasis on quarterback Justin Herbert’s performance. “Be better. Be better,” Harbaugh said. He said the expectation applies to Herbert, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, and the entire team.
Herbert has been the Chargers’ starter in all three games and has been intercepted at least once in each contest. His QBR during McDaniel’s first three games directing the offense is 27.4, 29th in the league. Herbert’s 59.1% completion rate is the lowest of his career.
Los Angeles managed 16 points against Buffalo. Three dropped passes cost the offense potential yardage, while five third-quarter penalties interrupted its progress. Herbert threw one interception, which came in the end zone and stopped a red-zone chance. The Chargers’ defense had created five turnovers in its previous game, according to the report.
Herbert said he was unsure why the offense has struggled. He said the team needs to identify the problem, follow its coaches’ instructions and work collectively to fix it. The next four opponents are Seattle, Denver, Kansas City and the Los Angeles Rams, whose listed records are 2-1, 2-1, 3-0 and 1-2. Harbaugh said the team will examine its scheme, execution and assignment of responsibilities.
