The Los Angeles Rams are exploring a new strategy regarding their backup quarterback situation behind Matthew Stafford. Head coach Sean McVay announced on September 4 that both Stetson Bennett IV and Ty Simpson are being evaluated for the role, with a focus on their development throughout the season.
McVay characterized the current situation as distinct from previous years, noting that both players will have opportunities for training. He stated, "I'll tell you when I decide who's going to be the actual 2 in the game," indicating that the competition for the backup position remains open.
While the Rams' depth chart lists Bennett as second and Simpson as third, McVay views their roles as interchangeable.
This decision follows Stafford's absence from preseason games, which allowed Bennett and Simpson to assume the majority of quarterback responsibilities. During the preseason, Bennett completed 62.2% of his passes for 219 yards, while Simpson achieved a completion rate of 78.3%, throwing for 382 yards and three touchdowns without any interceptions.
McVay's comments reflect the team's evolving strategy, emphasizing that plans for Week 1 against the 49ers may change as the season progresses. The status of undrafted rookie Matthew Caldwell is uncertain due to a knee injury sustained in the preseason finale, where he completed five of ten passes for 31 yards and one touchdown before his injury.
