San Jose State University is currently in training camp, emphasizing defense improvements following a tough 2025 season that saw them ranked 115th in the nation for passing defense. To tackle these challenges, the Spartans have made notable offseason changes, including the hiring of a new defensive coordinator and additional coaching staff.
Bojay Filimoeatu has taken on the role of first-year defensive coordinator after serving as interim at the end of last season. He replaces Derrick Odum, who was dismissed after nine years. Filimoeatu has assembled an experienced coaching staff, with Brian Norwood as the defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach, and Joe Dale overseeing safeties.
Head Coach Ken Niumatalolo expressed strong confidence in his team's capabilities, particularly highlighting Norwood's extensive experience and Dale's coaching skills.
The cornerback unit is seeing a significant overhaul, with only four returning players who have limited starting experience, complemented by five new transfers, including Isaiah Buxton from San Diego State. The safety positions feature one returning player, Charles Cox, alongside recruits Brian Dukes Jr. and Pierce Walker, both with prior starting experience.
Although the linebacker group faces challenges due to the graduation of key players, returners Ethan Powell, Naseri Danielson, and Dylan Lee are expected to lead. The defensive line remains stable, with players like Justin Stearns and Etu Finau, along with new recruits Jayland McGlothen and Ian Shewell, as the Spartans aim to bolster their defensive performance for the upcoming season.
