Christian Koss circled the bases at Fenway Park without hitting a ball over the wall. Officially, it was not a home run.
The Associated Press described the seventh-inning sequence in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox as "a true Little League homer, with the Little League World Series ongoing in Williamsport, Pennsylvania." ESPN's box score gives Koss three at-bats, one run, one hit, zero official RBI, zero walks, and zero strikeouts, with a .200/.238/.250 line.
The scoring play reads: Koss reached on an infield single to shortstop, then scored on a throwing error by right fielder Wilyer Abreu. Boston was charged with two errors, by Andruw Monasterio and Abreu.
The AP wrote that Koss reached safely on a throwing error by Monasterio that got past Willson Contreras, rounded second, and saw Abreu's throw sail over third base and into a camera well, allowing him to score. ESPN scored the play as an infield single plus Abreu's throwing error.
Jake Bennett was charged with four runs, three earned, in seven innings, so Koss's run was the unearned run on Bennett's line.
The lead that disappeared before Koss scored
San Francisco had led 3-0 after Jonah Cox's 384-foot homer onto the Monster in the second, ESPN shows. Boston answered with five unanswered runs from the second through the fourth: Nick Sogard's 415-foot homer, a Ceddanne Rafaela single, Connor Wong's reviewed Monster double, Mickey Gasper's double, and another Rafaela single. Koss's tour of the bases in the seventh made it 5-4.
Tyson Guerrero threw a scoreless eighth, and Aroldis Chapman recorded his 29th save, the AP reported.
Bennett (8-6) allowed seven hits, walked one, and struck out six over seven innings on 84 pitches, 65 strikes, ESPN shows. Matt Wilkinson (0-1) took the loss after 3.2 innings, seven hits, and four earned runs. Guerrero worked a scoreless eighth (one hit).
