A new entertainment venue featuring immersive 360-degree video projections has opened in downtown San Jose. The Domes, located at 171 Post St. near San Pedro Square, began operations on Wednesday, coinciding with the start of the FIFA World Cup. The facility is designed to host watch parties for the U.S. men’s national soccer team, as well as concerts, dance events, art installations, and corporate gatherings.
The primary structure is a 60-foot geodesic dome capable of seating 300 people. It utilizes 8K wraparound projection technology and spatial sound to create an immersive environment. Plans are in place to construct two additional domes at the same site, which are expected to be finished by the fall. These additions will form a larger dome park.
Chris Lawes, the founder and chief executive officer of The Domes, established the company in San Jose 11 years ago. While he has created approximately 50 specialized domes globally, this marks his first dome located within a city. Lawes described the venue as a space for communal sports, art, education, and community engagement. He stated that San Jose was chosen for its reputation as a center for technological innovation, entrepreneurship, and multiculturalism.
Local officials and business leaders have welcomed the opening. District 3 Councilmember Anthony Tordillos, who represents the downtown area, noted that the redevelopment of the site represents a creative approach to infrastructure. He emphasized the need for such event spaces in the community, particularly during a year filled with major sporting events.
Harbir Kaur Bhatia, CEO and president of the Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce and Innovation, said the venue will offer enriched experiences for both local residents and international visitors. She added that it provides reasons for people to feel pride in being part of Silicon Valley.
