Astros Fall to Padres 7-2 Despite Varsho, Merrill Homers

The Houston Astros faced a difficult offensive challenge at Petco Park on Monday, ultimately falling 7-2 to the San Diego Padres. Despite receiving solid pitching support early, Houston’s lineup struggled to generate sustained momentum against the Padres' defense and bullpen.

Early Power Display

Houston’s only significant offensive breakthroughs came via the long ball. In the second inning, Varsho launched a 395-foot home run to right-center field, driving in Trammell to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Shortly after, Merrill added another solo shot, this one measuring 411 feet to center field, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

However, the Astros' lead was short-lived. San Diego responded decisively in the fourth inning. Tatis Jr. cleared the bases with a 421-foot home run to left field, scoring both Rengifo and Fermin in a three-run surge that shifted the game’s trajectory. The Padres took a 4-2 advantage that Houston could not erase.

Pitching Performance

For Houston, Cristian Javier took the loss, pitching five innings while allowing eight hits and four earned runs, along with one walk and two strikeouts. His record dropped to 1-3. Relief pitchers AJ Blubaugh and Bryan King followed, combining to allow five more hits and three earned runs over three innings.

Blubaugh pitched two innings with one hit and one earned run, while King allowed two hits and two earned runs in his inning of work, striking out three batters.

On the mound for San Diego, Randy Vasquez secured the win, improving his record to 8-6. He matched Javier’s five-inning effort, limiting the Astros to two hits and two earned runs while issuing no walks and recording one strikeout. Kyle Hart and Bradgley Rodriguez provided relief, each pitching one and two innings respectively without allowing a hit or run.

Hart recorded one strikeout, while Rodriguez also struck out one batter. Jeremiah Estrada closed the game with a perfect inning, striking out two batters and allowing zero hits, runs, walks, or home runs.

Late Inning Closure

San Diego extended its lead in the sixth inning when Sheets hit a 393-foot home run to right field, making the score 5-2. The Padres finalized the scoring in the eighth inning as Hays hit a 361-foot home run to left field, bringing home Bowen for a 7-2 final tally.

The loss leaves the Houston Astros with a 60-59 record, while the San Diego Padres improve to 62-57. The game drew 40,160 fans to Petco Park.
