The San Francisco 49ers are gearing up for their upcoming preseason matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on August 20 at SoFi Stadium. A notable issue for the team is running back Christian McCaffrey's absence from practice due to tightness.
NBC Sports NFL insider Mike Florio has suggested that McCaffrey's missing practice may not solely be due to injury, but could also relate to his contract situation. He pointed out that recent deals for other running backs, including Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs, may have impacted McCaffrey's decision.
At 30 years old, McCaffrey is set to earn $12.5 million this season, with none of it guaranteed, making this a critical time for him regarding contract negotiations.
Florio indicated that McCaffrey likely recognizes his importance to the team and might be pursuing a contract adjustment. He noted that the veteran running back may prefer to avoid additional strain from training camp and preseason, suggesting he will be prepared for the regular season if the 49ers respond to his contract issues.
Last season, McCaffrey had a significant impact on the team, playing 931 snaps and achieving a PFF grade of 78.3. He rushed for 1,202 yards and scored 10 touchdowns on 311 carries, while also making 102 receptions for 924 yards and seven touchdowns.
