The San Francisco 49ers have placed running back Patrick Taylor Jr. on injured reserve due to an undisclosed injury, marking his second consecutive year on season-ending IR. This injury adds to the challenges faced by the team's running back group, which is already dealing with multiple injuries.

In response to Taylor's situation, the 49ers have re-signed Khalil Herbert, who was released earlier in the week. During the preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans, Herbert recorded a total of six carries for 18 yards and caught two passes for 35 yards.

The 28-year-old has experience in the NFL, having been drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2021 and playing for teams such as the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets.

As Herbert enters his sixth NFL season, he has appeared in 63 games, starting 31, and has accumulated 1,957 rushing yards on 416 carries, along with nine touchdowns. The 49ers are also facing injuries to running backs Jordan James, who has fractured ribs from training camp, and Isaac Guerendo, who is recovering from a torn pectoral muscle.

If Guerendo is activated from the Physically Unable to Perform List, he will compete for a roster spot against Herbert and Sincere McCormick, although he has not participated in practice throughout the summer. Further details regarding the injury situation have not been disclosed.
