The Los Angeles Rams have enhanced their wide receiver group by trading running back Jarquez Hunter to the Miami Dolphins for Tutu Atwell. This transaction occurs as the NFL regular season nears and uncertainty surrounds Puka Nacua, who may be facing a suspension.

Atwell previously played five seasons with the Rams after being selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He tallied 105 receptions for 1,535 yards and five touchdowns during his tenure in Los Angeles. In the 2025 season, however, his performance dipped, with just six catches for 192 yards and one touchdown over ten games.

His prior experience with head coach Sean McVay’s system may prove advantageous as the season commences.

The timing of the acquisition raises speculation about its relation to Nacua's potential disciplinary issues stemming from an offseason incident. Although the NFL has yet to make any announcements regarding Nacua, and the Rams have not directly connected the trade to his situation, Atwell’s return could be a strategic move in anticipation of Nacua's status.

Should Nacua be suspended, Atwell's experience would be crucial, allowing him to integrate quickly into the Rams' offensive strategy. The Rams are set to face the San Francisco 49ers in Australia for their Week 1 matchup, emphasizing the need for immediate readiness.

This trade also reflects the Rams’ decision that Hunter would not have a major impact on the team, providing them with additional receiver depth.
