Drivers heading up Highway 9 into the hills above Saratoga should plan for delays starting Monday, Nov. 2, when Caltrans begins a daytime lane closure for brush and debris clearing.

One-way traffic control will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on State Route 9 between Toll Gate Road and the Highway 35 interchange at the summit, the agency said in a notice posted Friday. Crews will spend about 10 days on what Caltrans calls a vegetation management operation, cutting back fire fuels and removing debris along the road.

The California Highway Patrol will be on site to help direct traffic. Caltrans asks drivers to expect delays, allow extra time and slow down through the work zone. The schedule depends on the weather.

Highway 17 striping at night

The same week, Caltrans starts the last phase of its repaving project on Highway 17 between Hebard Road in the Lexington Hills area and the Santa Cruz County line.

Crews have finished laying a new rubberized asphalt surface on that stretch, according to a separate Caltrans notice. Beginning the week of Nov. 2, they will paint permanent striping in both directions, using a rolling lane closure:

  • Northbound: 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next morning
  • Southbound: 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. the next morning

The CHP will also provide traffic control for the night work, which is weather dependent as well. Caltrans said the project included road repairs and safety improvements.

For live closure information, Caltrans points drivers to its QuickMap site, quickmap.dot.ca.gov, and to 511.org. Statewide highway conditions are also available by phone at 1-800-427-7623.
