Turner Hill was hitting fourth and starting in left field Monday, MLB.com reported, in his seventh big-league game. Monday's injured-list and bereavement moves had opened the middle of the San Francisco Giants' order. MLB.com wrote that the club cobbled together a lineup that included third baseman Shay Whitcomb, right fielder Grant McCray, and second baseman Nate Furman, all recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.

Hill doubled to deep right in the first off Chase Burns, scoring Rafael Devers and making it 2-0. Jung Hoo Lee, who had just singled in Drew Gilbert, was thrown out at the plate, ESPN's box score shows. CBS Sports lists the double as Hill's third of the season and the RBI as his third.
He finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base and a .267/.368/.467 line, per CBS Sports.
The first inning was four straight hits: Gilbert's double, Devers' single, Lee's single, Hill's double. Burns then struck out Drew Cavanaugh and Nate Furman to limit the damage to two. NBC Sports Bay Area noted that Burns entered 14-2 with a 2.51 ERA and was making his first career start at Oracle Park.
He left after 3.2 innings, 14-3, charged with five earned runs on nine hits.
Walk, steal, shutout
Hill walked to lead off the third. CBS Sports' play-by-play has him stealing second, with Jose Trevino catching, before Furman struck out on a foul tip and Shay Whitcomb struck out swinging. ESPN's box marks it as Hill's first stolen base of the season. Hill flied out to center in the fifth and grounded to second in the eighth.
Devers hit a three-run homer in the second, scoring Christian Koss and Gilbert. MLB.com put the drive at 427 feet with a 108.9 mph exit velocity, Devers' 27th homer, for a 5-0 lead the Giants kept. Carson Whisenhunt left in the third with elbow pain.
Jason Foley (1-1) got the win. MLB.com wrote that Foley, Reiver Sanmartin, Ryan Walker, Carson Seymour, and Dylan Smith combined for 6.1 scoreless innings and that the night was San Francisco's 10th shutout this season.
